Get to Know Dr. Hutchins

Robert K. Hutchins, M.D. is a retina and vitreous surgeon who has been practicing in the Cincinnati and Southeast Indiana region since 1987. Dr. Hutchins teaches retinal surgery to resident physicians and vitreo-retinal surgical fellows at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, where he is a member of the full-time faculty as an Associate Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and runs the Retina Service. Dr. Hutchins’ expertise covers the entire spectrum of vitreo-retinal conditions some of which include complex retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, macular pucker, macular degeneration, ocular histoplasmosis, retinal vascular disease, and posterior segment trauma.

Dr. Hutchins received his Medical Degree from University of Illinois where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Society. He then completed a Medical Internship at Harvard Medical School, Mt. Auburn Hospital before starting an Ophthalmology Residency at Tufts, New England Medical Center Hospitals in Boston. Following his general Ophthalmology training, Dr. Hutchins gained additional expertise in surgery of the retina and vitreous as a fellow at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston.

Dr. Hutchins has organized and led numerous retinal courses developed to train Ophthalmologists. He has published a number of scientific papers, given scientific presentations at national ophthalmic meetings, and has been a co-investigator in national research projects, some of which have been sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH).
